EDUCATION FOR SEMPORNA

The Bajau Laut clan has occupied Borneo land for generations. Their culture of living on the sea is their unique trademark identity and a precious addition to Malaysia's multi-cultural diversity.

Sadly, most of them are in the status of stateless and denied access to proper education and healthcare eventhough they are born and raised in Malaysia.

It is our duty to help them fulfill their education needs. TFTN has started an initiative to provide basic education for these stateless children. We started by teaching 16 pupils early this year and we aim to accommodate up to 30 children by the end of August 2017.

Our education program focuses on teaching basic reading and writing skills with two teachers and five volunteers involved. We hope to hire five teachers by the end of 2017.

We also provide environmental education and arts through theatre activities. We believe this effort will bring positive impact to the society and reduce the crime rate within the Semporna region.

At 4-14th of August 2017, TFTN with the collaboration of Ikatan Anak Muda Sabah and KUASA has organised Semporna Education Project. It is a project to tackle education needs between stateless children in Sabah.

The project consist of starting a reading class for 30 kids. Along with games and quiz. The kids also being trained for theatre performance and performed in front of the villagers of Kampung Bangau-Bangau, Semporna Sabah.

We also visited a nearby school Sekolah Dato' Panglima Abdullah 2 to spread awareness about activism and change among teenagers.

The project turn out successfully and being follow up by reading classes three time every week.

We hope that more can contribute in this project for the betterment of our children.
